A trip to the airport

I'm not going to say Jesse is a procrastinator. Let's just say he isn't one to rush into anything. Takes away the thrill and excitement that only last-minute planning can bring.

Sid and I began our day when our alarm sounded at 4:00 am. Time to make sure Jesse's up and going so he'll be at the airport in time for his 6:50 am flight to New York. In New York he'll meet up with other missionaries, and they'll all fly together to Africa.

We awoke to find Jesse already up and going. He had not slept. Excited you say? Too anxious
to sleep? No, he was still working on his To Do list which he had been postponing all week. He had stayed up all night organizing his stuff, packing up his room, writing down people's addresses, transferring church music to his iPod, packing his suitcases, etc. He said he actually planned on not going to sleep the night before so he'd be able to sleep on the plane. Hmmm.

So we were tying up loose ends up to the last minute and then we weighed his suitcases. The weight limit was 50 pounds each, and his large bag was 64 pounds. Oh no! Overweight bags going overseas are charged very hefty fees. So we juggled this and juggled that, and ejected a few items. It was past time to leave for the airport and still we had not solved the problem. We finally realized he had to take the next larger bag as his second bag, so we quickly transferred its' contents over and ran out the door. I'm not at liberty to say which traffic laws Sid did or did not obey as we traveled. But we arrived at McCarran safe and sound.

After a brief adrenalin producing event at the ticket counter where we couldn't find Jesse's passport for a while, we proceeded to the security checkpoint. The line was longer than one would possibly imagine at that hour of the morning.

So we waited with Jesse as the line slowly moved along. It was nice of Shauna, Davis, Shannon and Kevin to be there at such an early hour. Jesse's friend Cody Lehr, who was flying to the same mission, also waited in line with us.

We said our goodbyes near the security checkpoint and watched as Jesse and Cody made it past the X-ray equipment. They were in good spirits and excited to be on their way. By now it was 6:30 and they had 20 minutes to get to D gate. I am assuming they made it because we have not heard otherwise.

All in all Jesse handled everything quite well. If he felt pressured or nervous it didn't show.

We returned home from the airport to a too quiet house. We missed him already but were very excited for Jesse and the experience ahead of him.
